Alexander R. Thorup, Principal

Alex Thorup has focused his entire career working in and around Virginia state government, starting as a registered lobbyist for the Virginia Chamber of Commerce and the Virginia Manufactured and Modular Housing Association while still earning his undergraduate degree at the University of Richmond. His time in state government has included roles as Legislative Assistant to a member of the General Assembly, Policy Advisor to the House Majority Leader, and Director of Policy and Legislation for the 55th Speaker of the House of Delegates. During this time, Alex contributed to the passage of significant bipartisan legislation related to transportation improvement, tax and regulatory reform, and healthcare accessibility.

Alex also served in multiple roles at the Virginia Economic Development Partnership, leading their public policy program and serving as chief of staff to the interim CEO. While at the Partnership, Alex led efforts to secure a significant increase in state funding for the authority and guided major economic incentive packages through the General Assembly’s MEI committee. He is most proud of his involvement in the creation of the Virginia Business Ready Sites Program, which is now one of the state’s leading economic development programs.

Prior to founding The Trafford Group, Alex was Vice President of Government Relations at Commonwealth Strategy Group. He represented corporations, industry associations, and non-profits before the General Assembly, Executive Branch, and state agencies. Alex helped lead the firm’s energy and pharmaceutical practices, while also focusing on business services, public procurement, and transportation matters.

Alex is a member of the Board of Directors of the Virginia Renewable Energy Alliance. He graduated from the University of Richmond, where he played on the Varsity Men’s Soccer team. He holds a Certificate from the Virginia Institute of Economic Development at Virginia Tech. Outside of the office, Alex enjoys playing golf, running and cycling, fly fishing, and traveling. He lives in Richmond with his wife, Lauren, and daughter, Caroline.
